Our Mission to Protect Our Bees, Empower Beekeepers, and Educate Communities
We’re on a mission to protect our tiny heroes, the honeybee. Honeybees are an essential part of food production worldwide, pollinating most of the world’s fruits, vegetables, nuts, and more. More than 50 crops in South Africa — and over 90% of flowering plants worldwide — rely on honeybees and other pollinators to grow.
South Africa’s Western Cape is home to a unique honeybee subspecies called Apis mellifera capensis. Capensis bees are the only subspecies of honeybee worldwide that can reproduce without the help of a queen, making them essential and deserving of our protection.

SUPPORTING HONEYBEE HEROES
Honey House sources our honey and bee-related products from Honeybee Heroes, ensuring that every purchase supports this impactful non-profit. We actively participate in their programmes, assist with hive care using ethical practices, and offer our facilities and team for training.

The conservation of South Africa’s unique Cape Honey bee
We partner closely with Honeybee Heroes to play an active role in preventing the decline of South Africa’s Capensis honeybee. Through their apiary adoption programme, they create a direct pipeline for eco-minded individuals and businesses to get involved in South Africa’s species conservation efforts. Adopted beehives are placed on farms and private nature reserves in the Overberg and beyond, and are cared for by expert beekeepers using strictly ethical practices.

Empowering women through beekeeping
Honeybee Heroes’ Women in Beekeeping programme uplifts women from low-income households by training them to become beekeepers. In doing so, they are educating a new generation of beekeepers who will be able to independently provide for themselves and their families.

Educating the Next Generation
Education is crucial to our mission. We support initiatives like Bee Schools, organised by Honeybee Heroes, to teach children about the importance of pollinators. These educational events, held in schools situated in areas with limited financial resources, aim to instil an understanding of the crucial role of pollinators like honeybees. We believe that participating in Bee Schools empowers our children to become passionate advocates for conservation and sustainability.

Consumer Education
Through our partnership, we also educate consumers on making eco-conscious food choices. We encourage the purchase of locally produced artisanal honey over cheaper imports, highlighting sustainable practices that protect our ecosystem and underscore the essential role of pollinators.
We’re doing all we can to help our tiny heroes and improve livelihoods through beekeeping. If you’d like to find out how you can “bee” involved with any of these initiatives, fly over to www.honeybeeheroes.com.
